Game Development Process
Game Development Process:
The original idea was to have a time management game based around boba shops or bubble tea making. There would be several levels, each with a different number of toppings and teas. Each level would have a different goal of points needed to move on to the next level. Points are obtained by completing customer orders, and the sooner you complete an order the happier the customer is, giving you a more paw-sitive rating! However, if you don’t fulfill an order in time, the customer will get angry and leave, giving you zero points from their order.
We started with brainstorming ways to design the levels, and once we had decided on having customers on one side and the kitchen on the other, we split the work up and got started. We wanted the customers to appear after a set amount of time, so we created a customer queue that adds up as the level goes on. The tea blender and customers needed timers to show when they were done, and there was significant UI work that needed to be done to make the game flow.
Throughout development, we tried to prioritize the necessities of the game first, such as creating a drink, creating customers that had random orders, then moving on to having customers leave after a certain amount of time and assigning points.
Playtesting:
Although we weren’t able to give our classmates the game during class to playtest, we gave them a live demo and had others playtest as well. Some of their suggestions included:
- More feedback while playing, such as sounds
- Different, varying cycles to make drink-making not-so-linear
- Differing difficulties of drinks
- Make toppings run out and need to be cooked
- Colliders as triggers are a bit clunky, try using buttons instead
